Holy-freakn'-wow!! Amanda Milo revisits the world of the Gryfala princesses, their Rakhii, and their hobs. Yes another human female, Tara, is kidnapped by aliens and wakes up in a slave-auction as the next item up. But this isn't a clone of Stolen By an Alien. For one, Tara's a single mom of toddler twins and desperate to get back to them. For another, most of the story has them isolated on a space ship. Enter Tac'Mot, a Wanbaroo and ex-slave whose nostalgia trip to his place of auction brings him face-to-face with Tara, whom he mistakes for a Gryfala princess and spends his and his shipmate's last credits to buy. Tac's a gentle soul, a laid-back sort of half-kangaroo with lethal poison-dart-frog skin and a terrible consciousness of his differences. His one shipmate Lem is a weird OCD-afflicted germophobe in a bubble-helmet space suit. The other is Grake, a rejected hob deemed unworthy to serve a Gryfala. The captain is Brax, a curmudgeon of an outcast Rakhii whose genetics predispose him to bond (BIG NO-NO) with a Gryfala princess - the very crime which lead to his brother's execution. The tale of mistaken identity, rescue, and romance is complicated by a massive communication gap, since no-one can talk to Tara and she can't make herself or her need for her children understood. It also leads to multiple romantic disconnects despite Tac's growing desire for Tara, and Brax's irresistible urge to bond and mate with her. This is simultaneously the source of much heartache and much humor, and - NO SPOILERS - an incredible outcome for everyone. Milo's characters are so REAL - you feel all their frustration, all their hopes, and you want so badly for everything to be good for them, only it just seems SO impossible... I don't have enough words to praise this book in particular, or the series as a whole. I LOVE Amanda Milo's parallel first person perspective, with its alternating and juxtaposed characters' points of view and their running internal monologues. It allows her characters to reveal themselves and their relationships through their own thoughts and words. I love the quirky graphic component of her prose, with its non-standard indents, capitalization, punctuation, parentheticals and italics (though the latter are a wee bit over-used IMHO). The combination makes for a compelling immediacy to the action and an emotional intimacy with her characters. And I love her comprehensive command of language, the gift to use exactly the right words to create exactly the picture she wants you to see in your mind. I swear I'd read Milo's grocery list if she published it!Tags : Won by an Alien (Stolen by an Alien Book 3) - Kindle edition by Amanda Milo, Cameron Kamenicky, Naomi Lucas. Won by an Alien Stolen by an Alien Book 3 eBook Amanda Milo Cameron Kamenicky Naomi Lucas Reviews
But one by an alien was off the chain! Tara is a mother who is missing her children. Unfortunately, she’s wakes up in a slaver’s pen where she is sold to an alien. Told from three points of view, the story follows Tara and her new owner as they begin a relationship that is totally reliant on feelings, since they cannot communicate otherwise. The confusions and misunderstandings this causes are humorous, as well as heartrending. This is the third book in a series, and I didn’t hold out hope that it could be as wonderful as the first two. Boy, was I wrong! The author really takes this story through real problems of communication. What happens when you think you’re getting across your meaning, only to find you were completely misunderstood? Tara does a lot of crying and anxting, not realizing she’s inadvertently connected herself to two mates, neither one capable of understanding the reason for her tears and sorrow. Just when things go from bad to worst, we get to revisit the beloved characters from books one and two. I won’t say more to avoid spoilers, but I can say you will not regret picking this book up. If you haven’t read Stolen by an Alien yet, I suggest starting there. Each book can be read alone, but you will enjoy them much more when read in order.
I absolutely loved this story! This author takes very alien aliens and makes you fall in love with them. Warning these are not humans with blue skin. If you don't want your fantasy of aliens to involve... aliens... you are probably in the wrong place. Go alien or go home, someone said to me, and I totally agree! These are wonderful, thought provoking stories that really capture the voice of the characters, as told in the first person narrative. The world building is fantastic. The character development is wonderful. This specific story really shows how frustrating the challenges of not being able to communicate can be. And expands on the differences between physiology and culture and how it can effect all the players involved. Each of these stories is a complete, stand alone story. But they all fall under an overarching story line that really draws the reader in. This author does an exceptional job of dealing with delicate concepts like PTSD, feelings of abandonment, jealousy, territorial behaviors, and cultural conflict between both aliens and humans. But don't worry, no matter the seriousness of the subject matter, these stories are not dark. They are sweet and you definitely get your happily ever after.
Okay, for the record, the "flavor" of this novel isn't like the other two. If you want something with action and adventure, "Stolen by an Alien" would be the one to read. This is a slower, sometimes plodding tale in some sections, but considering that the story can be summed up as "An alien-abducted mother agonizes in her attempt to return to her abandoned children", that's what it is. Plot complication Poor communication that leads for Tara to mate with one male and physiologically bond to another. Heart vs. pheromones. Okay, this might not be most readers' cup o' tea, but the last tenth of the novel really made up for some of the frustrating parts I did have with this novel. It's hard as a reader to be enamored by one character and be angry at another character -- maybe not as endearing as the first -- getting a lot of air time. Now I will say that I think Amanda Milo could have tightened up some of the slower parts, thus gaining a few more brownie points from readers, but her attention to detail in the science of this novel is very good, better than most sci-fi/fantasy novels I've read and and edited. But it is comforting to know that other worlds could have crazy species that are the norm in Australia and New Zealand. (I've always thought that at the end of the Creation, God decided to mismatch all the leftover parts He had to orchestrate the species of these two incredible ecosystems.) I will definitely be looking forward to Milo's next book in this intriguing series.
