Kate Andretti is married to Vincenzo Andretti, the nephew of Carlos Andretti, a ruthless mafia don. Enrico Lucchesi is the widow of Antonella, who was the daughter of Carlo Andretti. He's also a mafia don. Carlo and Enrico are bitter enemies.

It's a story of revenge, betrayal and control between the Andrettis and Lucchesis. This story begins a year after the death of Antonella who kept the peace between the two families while alive. Enrico and Kate met and Enrico was drawn to her. After discovering that Vincenzo physically abused her, Enrico offered his protection which caused even more animosity between the two families. Of course, the relationship between Enrico and Kate immediately turned sexual. The story went downhill from there.

Kate went from a strong, smart and self-assured woman to an indecisive, seemingly stupid one, whose poor decisions put everyone around her in extreme jeopardy. Enrico was the weakest, most emotional mob boss ever. His two personal bodyguards were more alpha, assertive and strong than he was. Kate went from do I love or trust him or want to be with him if he's a mob boss to falling into bed with him at every opportunity. Enrico was so in love that he neglected his duties as a mob boss. He only wanted her to love him and was afraid she would reject him if she found out he was a mob boss. He knew he couldn't kill her as required if she found out he was mafia and couldn't accept him.

The Andretti family and Italian police were corrupt, amoral, vicious and cruel. The Lucchesi family did despicable things only when necessary to protect others. In spite of committing murders and other criminal acts, they all had good hearts. Even though the book had some drama, intrigue, graphic violence, gruesome murders and unending sex between Kate and Enrico, it just wasn't a realistic mafia romance.

I don't know that I'm interested in reading more books in this series

There is plenty of description what this book is about from the author's blurb. I didn't read other reviews before choosing this book, but I imagine there is more detail in other reviews too. I loved this book and made the mistake of starting it at bedtime. A little reading before going to sleep. Don't do it!! Learn from my error. Putting this story aside was hard as I was hooked with the first chapter! This isn't like any other mafia romance I've read in the past.
I've visited Florence, Italy, and the descriptions in this book brought back amazing memories of the charismatic Italian people, gorgeous vistas, gardens, history, art and more. The mafia, nope. That's all part of this book, but it reads like you're one of the Families and relevant to know the inside secrets, in detail. The old codes, bloodlines first, no drugs & prostitution, money laundering is a legit way of living as is protection. People protecting their businesses by paying the Mafia to watch over them, keep them out of harm from dangerous enemies. Add in romance, betrayal, mystery and this is a clear winner! 100% recommend and looking forward to reading the next 4-5 books in this series.
I gave this 5 stars, since I could not give it 4 1/2; it's a book I know I'll read again.

I'm not usually the kind of person who will seek out a book that talks about the Mafia - I'm not typically a fan of 'stuff in boxes', etc, however, in this case, I'm very glad I took a chance and read it. The amount of research that Dana did was impressive and showed. The way she captured the language, the way that the Mafiso works in that area, the 'code' that some of the more 'respectable' Mafiso stick too and the visuals of the area are fantastic.

Quick breakdown of the novel ~

Kate, a fair skinned American beauty, is living in Italy; she married Vince Andretti after a whirlwind courtship and not knowing that much about his 'family', Kate is drawn into a world that she only heard about from the news and in hushed tones. Kate's gut has told her something is 'amiss' about her husband, little does she know that he is part of the ruthless Andretti family.

Enter Enrico Lucchesi, a handsome, widowed businessman who also happens to be the capo of the Lucchesi family; he is also Kate's boss at the orphanage where Vince has reluctently let Kate work.

Enter the twists and turns of this compelling novel.

Dana weaves such a wonderful story of love, passion, trechery, 'old code' and lies that I stayed up til after midnight reading. The novel got a slow start, then once it got going you were drawn into this 'world' where people live by a different set of rules. A world where men have closed door meetings, where you might receive something in a box that belonged to someone you and love as a 'message'.

You watch the main characters grow, they fight, the love, they lie and they feel; they are well rounded and you can actually picture running into them in Italy and seeing the events unfold. The end of the book left me wanting to read the next novel. (Which is set to come out in April of 2012)
