This is the third zombpoc book I've read by Tracey Ward and I was not disappointed. This is one of those very rare books that I know I shall re-read; it's achingly evocative and draws your empathy strings so tight there are times your chest tightens and eyes mist over.
Plus Factors:
1. My mature policy is to award 5 stars only to top-shelf books. So there you have it.
2. Fantastically good characters. Joss is a stand-out in every respect. Okay, in her earlier works Tracy Ward is less adroit doing "guy characters" but with Ryan she's put up proof she's honed her craft and lifted her game. The way Joss and Ryan interact is written with delicacy and insight as Joss discovers and unpacks devotion for the first time in her life. It's simply so beautifully done.
3. Smooth and fast-flowing story with neat descriptions and dialog. An easy read that draws you in and keeps you engaged, in one session I kept reading until I was physically too tired to continue.
4. Clever and creative story angles. Qualities in which Tracey Ward excels.

Hmmm Factors: (Yes they do exist)
1. Joss speaks and reasons and rationalizes and plans and organizes as if she possesses a post-graduate degree and is a Bear Gryllis mentor. 17 year olds living solo on the streets whose formal schooling stopped at circa age 10, simply don't/can't/won't come close. Readers have to ignore this trumpeting elephant in the room. No plausible explanation is given for any of Joss' super-powers.
2. The book sort of ends in a cliff-hanger with no resolution. This is going to be a problem for early buyers because by the time Volume 2 comes out they'll most likely forgotten what went down in Volume 1. I fully understand why authors do this, but it doesn't make this irksome and irritating practice any easier to swallow.

Do yourself a favor and buy this sequence of books. If you don't, you'll be missing out on something truly special. (Volume 2 kicks it up a further notch, so get them both at the same time..okay? Review date: April 2014)

Just discovered this author. So far I've read the three books in this little apocalypse series and I'm pretty sad they're over. If you like apocalypse stories like Hunger Games or urban-fantasy along the lines of Patricia Briggs, you'll like these. Although there are no werewolves here, the writing is quick and witty, the people are complex enough to feel real without bogging you down in a lot of soap-opera nonsense. They have back-stories but the narrative is here-and-now so the past only sneaks out in small relevant bits. The main character is a strong women but young and written that way. Her emotional roller-coaster at the "end of the world" is a central premise but as someone who has studied psychology, I can tell you- its handled pretty well. As are her relationships with the other survivors she stumbles upon. In fact, one of the things I found refreshing this heroine doesn't have all the answers already figured out. Her journey is definitely worth reading.
I liked the concept of this book, set in the future during a zombie apocalypse, with the main protagonist being a 17 year old girl trying to survive on her own.

Joss is a strong female lead character and can certainly take care of herself, but we do get to see a softer side of her when she meets Ryan. I liked the interaction between Joss and Ryan although there is little romance in this book. There is, however, plenty of kick ass action.

The story became more interesting towards the latter part of the book when the scene changed and more characters were introduced.

The book ended on a cliff hanger, and although I didn't mind reading it, I didn't love it enough to continue on with the series.

I'd recommend this book to those who enjoy post apocalyptic stories with zombies and a strong, smart female lead character.
This was a very fun series to read. I've now read several books from this author and I've enjoyed them all. Her characters are very relatable to me (yes I can be a bit crazy and rough around the edges haha!) so perhaps that's why I just really enjoy them but I feel she does a great job at creating fun, realistic, flawed, awkward, likeable characters. This series was no different. It was fun getting to know Joss and Ryan and watching them both grow and develop throughout the story. I love that the ending (much like the prequel series) wrapped up enough ends to feel complete but also left enough open to feel real. They don't live in a perfect world, not even close so there is no "happily ever after" just like there isn't in real life. There is only "happily enough for now" and that's how they end. I love the tie-in with the previous series. I just thought everything was fun from beginning to end. There are a lot of editing errors but they were only occasionally distracting. I can overlook them as long as I don't have to stop and try to figure out what she's trying to say and I only had to do that maybe a few times. The world Ms. Ward created was great! The gangs, the zombies, the colonies...I felt like I could really see it the way she had it in her own head. I would read any spin-off series from this should she choose to write any more (hint, hint!) ;)
This book was my first jump into the Zombie genre, and all I can say, is I am hooked! I took a chance on this book, and not only found a new favorite author to add to my list, but a genre I never expected to like. It is not simply a zombie book, it involves, the evil that is within humans, just as much as the evil within the undead.

Being from Seattle, it was easy to visualize the city broken into this new world, and I couldn't help but follow along with these characters as they make their journey through the city. I could not help but fall in love with these characters.

Thank you for introducing me into this genre, I devoured this series and all the others that intertwine with it!
